Bay Area marks India’s 79th Independence Day with grand ‘Swades’ Parade and cultural festival

The streets of downtown San Jose turned into a vibrant tapestry of color, music, and tradition as the Association of Indo Americans (AIA), in partnership with Bolly 92.3, hosted Swades 2025 to celebrate India’s 79th Independence Day. The daylong festivities drew an estimated crowd of over 25,000, making it one of the largest Indian American gatherings in Silicon Valley this year.

A parade of culture and unity

The highlight of the celebration was the grand India Parade, featuring more than 75 floats supported by over 50 community organisations. Each float showcased the cultural richness of India’s states — from traditional dances of Gujarat and Haryana to depictions of Ramayana and Kerala’s temple arts. Participants dressed in colourful attire brought the streets alive with patriotic songs, drums, and folk performances.

Flag hoisting and dignitaries

The ceremonial flag-hoisting was led by popular Indian actress Ameesha Patel, who served as Grand Marshal, along with Srikanth Bolla, Founder of Earth Cleanse, and Rakesh Adlakha, Deputy Consul General of India in San Francisco. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan hoisted the American flag and praised AIA’s efforts, calling the event “a growing tradition that will only get bigger in the years to come”.

More than 50 elected officials across Silicon Valley, including Mayors, Council members, and State representatives, attended to show solidarity with the Indian American community.

Music, dance, and festivities

The festival continued late into the night with Vijay Bharat, a cultural showcase featuring classical and contemporary dances, a live concert by Jhoom Productions, and patriotic music performed by BATA/AIA karaoke singers. A special Dhol-Tasha performance set a powerful rhythm, drawing crowds into celebration. The evening concluded with fireworks that lit up the San Jose skyline.

Community spirit and recognition

Throughout the day, stalls offered regional delicacies, handicrafts, and games like carrom and chess, while children took part in traditional dance competitions. On stage, community leaders honored volunteers and sponsors whose support made the event possible.

AIA extended thanks to its sponsors, including Sanjiv Gupta CPA (Grand Sponsor), Lavanya Duvvi (Platinum Sponsor), Travelopod, and ICICI Bank, along with media and cultural partners.

Looking ahead

With Swades marking another successful milestone, AIA announced preparations for its next flagship event, the Dussehra Diwali Dhamaka, scheduled for October at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton. The program will feature a grand Rath Yatra, Mahamangala Aarti, fireworks, and the dramatic burning of a 35-foot effigy of Ravan.

Preserving heritage abroad

For the Bay Area’s Indian diaspora, Swades has become more than just a parade. It’s a living reminder of their roots, a platform for youth to embrace culture, and a bridge of friendship with the wider American community.
