BMC presents over ₹74,000 crore budget for 2025-26

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), considered the richest civic body in the country, on Tuesday (February 4, 2025) presented its budget of ₹74,427 crore for the year 2025-26.

The civic body is under an administrator since the term of the corporators ended on March 7, 2022.

According to BMC commisioner, Bhushan Gagrani, this is the biggest budget presented by the BMC till date.

Here are the highlights of the budget.

The budget witnessed an increase of ₹7,410 crore in revenue from last year. ₹43,166 crore is the capital expenditure, which is 58% of the total budget.

The capital expenditure of the BMC budget has increased by 598 crores, which takes it to ₹26,355.74 crores. 

According to the agencies that are assigned to dig the roads, Mumbai IIT will be overviewing the concretization activities in the city. This would be completed by May 31, 2025 to avoid the clogging during the monsoon.

10% of the budget is set to be spent on healthcare services.

BMC is planning to start house to house health check ups all over mumbai under the Aarogya Seva Aaply Dari scheme.

KEM marked centenary year and will be building centenary tower.

Education

BMC owns 470 school buildings, out of which 45 are under upgradation. This process is said to be completed by March 2025, whereas 36 will be completed by next year. 

Out of the 7934 classrooms, 3814 have already been digitalised. BMC also issued appointment letters to 622 candidates for the post of teachers.

The Municipal Corporation has implemented organic farming gardens in 100 BMC schools.

Environment

To combat the dust issues, BMC has decided to install 100 battery suction machines in its 24 wards.

The decision to convert all the bakeries to CNG from the conventional firewood method has been taken by the Municipal Corporation.

The BMC id also planning to bring the Kanjurmarg dumping ground under the waste to energy project.

BMC has decided to reclaim the dumping ground at Mulund.

A total of 70 lakh metric tons of legacy waste is decided to be processed and disposed of by June 2025 to reclaim 24 Ha. of land.

Approximately 40.93 lakh metric tons of legacy waste have been already processed and disposed of as of December 31, 2025. Processing and disposal of about 18.37 lakh metric tons of legacy waste is planned from January 2025 to March 2025, and about 10.7 lakh metric ton is planned for the year 2025-26.

BMC has signed an MoU with Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) to set up a Bio-CNG plant with a capacity of 1000 TPD MSW at Deonar Dumping Ground.

The Municipal Corporation has also announced its plan to create an exotic zoo on the 10-acre land acquired adjacent to Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Udyan. It is planning to bring in species of Giraffe, Zebra, White lion, Jaguar, and more, to the zoo.

Financial Assistance to BEST

From 2012-13 till January 2025, ₹11304.59 crore had been allocated to Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) as financial assistance.

A grant of ₹1000 crore was proposed for BEST for the 2025-26 period. An amount of ₹992 crore was sanctioned by the 15th Finance Commission for the purchase of electric buses. Out of this, ₹493.38 crore was already received and disbursed to BEST Undertaking.

BMC prepared the considering the suggestions of Mumbaikars.

It received highest number of suggestions concerning the BEST buses services.
