Actor Unni Mukundan has stepped down from the post of treasurer of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), citing increased work pressure and professional commitments.

In a social media post on Tuesday (January 14, 2024), he said that the “difficult decision” was taken after much thought and reflection.

“I have truly enjoyed my time in this position, and it has been both an exciting and rewarding experience. However, in recent months, the increasing demands of my work, particularly with Marco and other production commitments, have significantly impacted my mental health. Balancing these responsibilities, along with the pressures of my professional life, has become overwhelming. I now realise the importance of stepping back to focus on my own well-being and that of my family’s,” he said.

The actor, who is basking in the box-office success of Marco, said he can no longer fulfil his duties effectively given the growing commitments ahead. “It is with a heavy heart that I submit my resignation. I will, however, continue to serve until a new member is appointed, ensuring a smooth transition. I am deeply grateful for the trust and support I have received during my tenure, and I wish my successor every success in carrying forward the responsibilities of this role,” he said.

The association of actors had faced a setback when its executive committee was dissolved on August 27, 2024 amid growing allegations of sexual assault and misbehaviour raised by women against its members in the wake of the release of the K. Hema Committee report that probed the problems faced by women in the Malayalam film industry.

The committee, which was elected in June 2024, had a tenure up to 2027. After the dissolution, it has been functioning as an ad-hoc committee for the charity activities undertaken by the organisation, till the election is held for the new body.
