Business leaders mourn demise of late former PM Manmohan Singh

Leaders of the Indian industry and people from the world of business paid rich tributes to Late former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and the architect of modern India, who passed away on Thursday (December 26, 2024) at the age of 92 following age-related ailment.

“We mourn the passing away of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, one of the stalwarts who envisioned a new, liberalised India that is taking its rightful place in the world. Dr. Singh will always be remembered for his visionary thinking and deep insights while always being humble and upholding his personal values. His inspiring leadership earned him respect across the world,” said N. Chandrasekaran, chairman, Tata Sons.

“India has lost one of its tallest leaders and finest economists. His most defining contribution — the epochal 91 reforms spurred a multi-decadal economic boom and more importantly reshaped the calculus of possibilities for India and Indians,” Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman, Aditya Birla Group, said.

“Over several decades in public life, his intellect, wisdom, and humility stood as exemplars, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s conscience. His extraordinary rise from humble beginnings to the Prime Minister’s office epitomises the boundless potential of India and serves as an inspiration for generations of Indians,” he added 

Stating that he is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India and the visionary leader behind India’s economic liberalisation, Sajjan Jindal, chairman, JSW Group said, “[Dr. Singh] A statesman of humility and wisdom-India owes him a debt of gratitude”

The chair, president, Managing Director, member companies and staff of the United States-India Business Council have conveyed their heartfelt condolences to the family of Dr. Singh and to the people of India on his passing. 

“Prime Minister Singh played a key role in elevating U.S.-India ties and modernising the relationship and embarking both democracies on a steady path of strategic, economic, and technological convergence,” said USIBC President Ambassador (ret.) Atul Keshap.

“Through his sustained leadership in achieving the transformative agreement on civilian nuclear energy cooperation,Manmohan Singh was rightly regarded as an architect of the modern bilateral relationship and he will be remembered by many in America with honour and fondness for his gentle and clear leadership,” he said.

Addressing Dr. Singh as an architect of India’s economic reform and a leader of compassion, Vijay Kalantri, chairman WTC Mumbai said, “Knowing Dr. Manmohan Singh personally was an honour and working alongside him was a privilege. Sir, Your wisdom and humility will forever inspire us.”
