The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed five more chargesheets in five cases against 18 accused in connection with the “unregulated deposit scam” in Assam.

The chargesheets have been filed in a special Guwahati court. “These cases are being investigated by CBI Guwahati. These are apart from four chargesheets filed by the CBI Delhi, which too is investigating the Assam Ponzi Investment Scam cases,” the agency said on Monday. Of the 18 accused, there are two organisations — Upepithets Holdings Private Limited (UHPL) and Brahmaputra Sanchay and Biniyog Cooperative Society Limited (BSBCSL).

In one case, the CBI has submitted a chargesheet against Hemen Rava and Sankar Saha, director and manager of Upepithets Holdings. It alleges that Mr. Rava induced the general public to enter notarised loan agreements on the pretext of high returns on investments and misappropriated the funds. The accused had promised guaranteed monthly returns of 6% and above.

Another chargesheet has named Jiten Deka, Indrani Das, Sanjib Deka, Himangshu Talukdar, and Brahmaputra Sanchay & Biniyog Cooperative Society. The case pertains to deposits collected by the society under the “Grihalakshmi” scheme. The accused made false promise of returns up to 15% annually through the unregulated deposit schemes. Agents were allegedly offered commission ranging from 4% to 7% on the deposited amounts.

In the third chargesheet, Mainao Brahma, Dipankar Bhatta, Jyotisman Sarma, and Sumit Barman have been named, while Rishiraj Gogoi and Joy Modak — who were allegedly involving in running stock trading business in the guise of their company “Go Millions LLP” formed for selling various cosmetics and other products — have been arraigned in the fourth chargesheet.

The fifth chargesheet names Sankar Kumar Biswas, Rofiqul Islam, Dinesh Ch. Ray and Niranjan Kumar Malakar as accused. They purportedly made an arrangement to collect deposits through UPI/cash/cheques from different persons for investments in the name of ‘Titan Capital Market’ and did not deposit the received amount.
