Security was heightened and a 24-hour curfew imposed in Paldhi village in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district on Wednesday, following a clash between two groups in the area after an altercation between the driver of a Minister’s car and a group of locals, police officials said.

At least seven persons were arrested and sent in remand for two days for damaging public property during the violence.

“The violence broke after a road rage incident following a public gathering. Curfew has been imposed for 24 hours as a preventive measure. However, the situation is under control,” Maheswar Reddy, Superintendent of Police, Jalgaon district, told The Hindu.

Those arrested are booked under various sections related to rioting, mischief, and damaging public property, as per the police.

The altercation occurred on Tuesday at 9.30 p.m. between Shiv Sena MLA Gulabrao Patil’s driver and locals. The incident resulted in stone pelting, arson, and damage to multiple vehicles and shops.

According to the police, a few people were also injured in the incident.

Extra force deployed

After the incident escalated, additional force from the Jalgaon headquarters was deployed to control the situation. Police are looking for the root cause of the incident, scrutinising the CCTV footage.

According to sources, Minister for Water Supply Gulabrao Patil’s wife and two daughters-in-law were in the car.
