“Can’t You Score…”: Sunil Gavaskar’s Cheeky Exchange With ‘Mumbai Boy’ Yashasvi Jaiswal

Yashasvi Jaiswal celebrates after scoring his century for RR© AFP

Legendary Indian cricket team batter Sunil Gavaskar had a cheeky exchange with Yashasvi Jaiswal after the youngster guided Rajasthan Royals to victory over Mumbai Indians in their IPL 2024 match on Monday. Jaiswal slammed an unbeaten 104 as RR comfortably chased down a target of 180 against a hapless MI bowling attack. This was the second IPL century for Jaiswal and incidentally, his first ton also came against MI. After the match, Gavaskar asked the ‘Mumbai boy’ Jaiswal why he always scores centuries against MI and the exchange has gone viral on social media. Jaiswal quickly responded that he did not have anything specific in his mind and he was trying to do what works well for him.

Gavaskar: “Yashasvi! Sunil here. This is your second century against the Mumbai Indians. And you’re a Mumbai boy. What is it that is making you score these hundreds against them? Can’t you score these hundreds against others?”

Jaiswal: “Nothing. It’s just that I think am trying to do what I do well. Some days are tough, some days are good. And I was just playing. That’s all. I didn’t have anything in my mind.”

Coming to the match, Yashasvi found his form as he slammed a brilliant century to guide Rajasthan Royals to victory over Mumbai Indians. Earlier, Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera took MI to 179/9 despite Sandeep Sharma taking a five-wicket haul and Yuzvendra Chahal claiming his 200th IPL wicket.

In response, Jaiswal looked in sensational form as he made short work of the run chase and he was assisted brilliantly by Jos Buttler and RR skipper Sanju Samson.

“I really enjoyed from the start and I made sure I was watching the ball properly and playing proper cricketing shots. I’m trying to do what I am doing well, some days it comes good and some days it doesn’t, I’m not thinking much. I want to thank all my seniors the way they have guided me. I want to thank the Rajasthan Royals management and especially Sanga sir and Sanju bhai for giving me opportunities. I go out and give my best in the practice sessions and I’m so happy today,” Jaiswal said.
