We lost the elections to the Supreme Court, not to the BJP: Mamata-Trinamool’s Abhishek Banerjee

Diamond Harbour MP and Mamata All India Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee on Thursday (November 5, 2026) claimed that his party lost the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections to the Supreme Court of India and not to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“I have no qualms in saying this that we lost the Bengal elections to the Supreme Court of India and not to the BJP because we took a leap of faith on the highest court of the country,” Mr. Banerjee said on Thursday (November 6, 2026) evening.

The Mamata AITC leader said that the Supreme Court had assured that names will be included in the voter list three days before polling which was not allowed and randomisation of counting staff was not followed by (Chief Electoral Officer) Manoj Agarwal. “Let the government of India or ECI take suo motu cognisance and file a case against me. I will represent myself and fight it at the Supreme Court,” Mr. Banerjee said.

The remarks by the Mamata AITC leader come at a time when protests are raging across the country over allegations of “vote-theft” and demands of scrapping Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. In West Bengal 91 lakh electors were removed from the voter list during SIR which preceeded before assembly polls . Mamata Banerjee and her party had challenged SIR before the Supreme Court and Ms. Banerjee had also appeared in person before the Supreme Court. In the Assembly polls, the BJP came to power winning 207 of the 294 seats in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.

Abhishek Banerjee also made allegations that the police are threatening the accused in police custody with an encounter. Mr. Banerjee’s personal assistant Sumit Roy is in police custody and the Trinamool leader has been named as accused in more than 20 FIRs since the Bharatiya Janata Party government came to power in May 2026.

The remarks come after Mamata AITC leadership has also raised allegations of planted evidence at their vacated party office after ₹1 crore cash was recovered from the premises. The party office in question is a part of Mr. Banerjee’s constituency Diamond Harbour. Abhishek Banerjee alleged that his personal assistant Sumit Roy was being pressurised and forced under threat to testify about the recovered cash.

“Money was brought between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. in the night from the Black XUV that Diamond Harbour SP uses,” Mr. Banerjee alleged.
