U.S. midterm election results: Senate, House and Governor shifts before and after

The November U.S. midterm elections saw a major shift in Washington’s power dynamic as Democrats captured full control of both chambers of the U.S. Congress, by crossing the 218-seat threshold needed for a majority.

In contrast to the 2022 midterms, where former President Joe Biden’s Democrats defied expected losses by holding the Senate and narrowly losing the House, the 2026 midterms saw Democrats gain full control of both chambers of Congress.

The almost dramatic swing towards Democrats, by the very same voters in the conservative bastion that propelled President Donald Trump to a second term just two years ago, is a result of widespread discontent over economic pressures including high living costs along with foreign policy decisions regarding the war with Iran. Voters elected Democratic candidates across the conservative strongholds and swing states creating a divided government under Mr. Trump.

The shift between 2022 and 2026 midterms

In the 2022 midterms, pre-election predictions pointed toward a powerful “red wave” favouring Republicans due to surging inflation and low approval ratings for Mr. Biden. But the wave failed to fully materialise. Democrats defied the trends by retaining control of the Senate (reaching 50 seats after picking up Pennsylvania and holding Nevada), though Republicans narrowly flipped control of the House of Representatives with a slim majority.

In the 2026 midterms, the story was different. Democrats scored a sweeping victory over the ruling party, seizing control of both Senate and the House of Representatives.

Senate Breakdown

In 2022 midterm elections, Democrats entered the election with a 50-50 split (with Vice-President Kamala Harris as the tiebreaker) and expanded their narrow control.

They gained a net seat by flipping Pennsylvania (where Democrat John Fetterman defeated Mehmet Oz) and secured a majority by holding Nevada (Catherine Cortez Masto), finishing with 50 seats to Republicans’ 49.

In 2026, Democrats captured full control of the 100-seat upper chamber by making historic inroads into Republican strongholds. The Democratic Caucus has currently secured 54 seats to achieve majority after defending its existing seats and winning key races, while the Republican Caucus has secured 44 seats. The counting is still under way.

Major wins include James Talarico gaining a Senate seat in Texas, Kansas electing its first Democratic Senator since the Great Depression and Democrats defeating Mr. Trump’s handpicked candidate in South Carolina (Democrat Annie Andrews ousting Republican Darline Graham).

House of Representatives breakdown

In 2022, Republicans gained control of the House, gaining nine net seats to secure a narrow majority of 222 seats compared to the Democrats’ 213 seats, crossing the majority mark of 218 seats in the 435-seat chamber. This narrow margin of victory was potentially close to the 221–212 margin seen in 2001.

Meanwhile, in 2026, Democrats reversed those gains in a nationwide rout. Democrats have officially won 228 seats, surpassing the 218 needed for a majority. Republicans have secured 139 seats. The final counts are still being finalised.

Gubernatorial races

Gubernatorial contests saw Democrats pick up two net Governor’s mansions in 2022, maintaining 24 governorships to the Republicans’ 26. Before the election, Republicans held a 28 to 22 seat advantage. Also, voters in 2022 rejected election-denier candidates in battleground State races for Governor, Secretary of State and Attorney General (with 12 out of 13 such candidates losing).

Following 2026 midterm elections, the Democratic Party is holding a majority of Governorships nationwide for the first time in 16 years. Current standing features 28 Democratic Governors, consisting of 22 election victories compared to 20 Republican Governors, with 12 election victories. Democrats Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia, Amy Acton in Ohio, Rob Sand in Iowa and Gina Hinojosa in Texas won races for Governor flipping GOP-held offices.
