The story so far: While responding to a question about the Ganga Water Treaty, which will expire on December 12, 2026, the Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that the two sides have a Joint River Commission in place, which he described as the “structured mechanism” that will deal with the Ganga Water Treaty. The Official Spokesperson’s remarks indicate that, irrespective of the status of the Ganga Water Treaty, the two sides will remain engaged at the level of the Joint River Commission, and all issues can be addressed at the commission’s level.

India and Bangladesh share about 54 rivers, of which three — the Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Teesta — are major rivers that are vital to Bangladesh’s agriculture and flood-preparation mechanism. Following the war of 1971, India and Bangladesh agreed to establish a Joint River Commission to deal with all river-water-related issues between the two sides.
