Coimbatore district women’s wing of the DMK staged a protest in the city on Saturday (October 31), condemning the TVK government over alleged lapses in women’s and children’s safety, law and order issues and rising prices.
DMK district secretaries Durai Senthamizh Selvan, Thondamuthur Ravi and Thalapathy Murugesan were present.
DMK State secretary of the students’ wing Veeramani and party headquarters speaker Kalavathi addressed the gathering.
Speaking at the protest, Mr. Veeramani alleged that law and order had deteriorated under the TVK government and that incidents involving crimes against women and children had increased. He claimed that parents were apprehensive about sending their daughters to schools, colleges and even shops.
Referring to incidents of murder, robbery, sexual harassment and gang rape, he alleged that several TVK functionaries had also been involved in various criminal cases. He also criticised the government over incidents of prisoners escaping from jails.
Accusing the TVK government of failing to fulfil pre-election assurances, Mr. Veeramani said the steep rise in prices was the Deepavali gift that the Chief Minister had given to his ‘Nanbas and Nanbis’ (friends).
Mayor K. Ranganayaki, Deputy Mayor Vetriselvan, DMK general council member Saraswathi, zonal chairpersons Laksmi Ilanchelvi Karthik, Meena Logu, besides district functionaries and office-bearers of various party wings, participated in the protest.
