Jamia protest: University shifts classes online to ensure ‘safety, security’ of students

Jamia protest: University shifts classes online to ensure ‘safety, security’ of students

Posted on October 24, 2026 By admin

Jamia Millia Islamia university in Delhi on Saturday (October 24, 2026) announced that classes of all its courses have been shifted to online mode until further notice to ensure the “safety and security” of its students amid an ongoing protest demanding restoration of elected student representation on campus.

In an official notice, the university said this is a precautionary measure taken to safeguard students’ academic interests and to ensure “continuity in the teaching-learning process without any undue disruption”.

Several students have been staging a hunger strike since October 12 demanding the restoration of student union elections that were last held in 2006. JMI has not held student union elections since they were dissolved following campus violence.

Earlier in the week, Jamia constituted a committee to draft the constitution of its students’ union, which was dissolved in 2006. The five-member committee will be chaired by Zubair Meenai, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The committee will examine the circumstances that led to the dissolution of the students’ union in 2006, relevant court rulings, and the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee (2007). It has been asked to consult all stakeholders, including students, and submit a draft by December 20.

The development followed the constitution of a high-level committee on October 18 to engage with protesting students and examine their demands. According to the university administration, the panel members held discussions with student representatives on October 19 and 20, but the students did not agree to sign the minutes of the discussions.

The development came after more than 1,500 teaching and non-teaching staff, along with Vice-Chancellor Mazhar Asif and Registrar Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi, gathered at the Ansari Auditorium lawns in the morning and later marched to Gate No. 7 to urge protesters to call off their agitation.

In a statement, the university said the staff had unanimously resolved to appeal to the students to vacate the protest site and restore normalcy on campus. They also decided to repaint walls defaced with what the administration described as “objectionable slogans”.

According to the university, the staff persuaded the protesters for nearly two hours to end their agitation, but the students continued raising slogans and asked the faculty to return.

The administration alleged that some protesters pushed security guards, staff members and teachers, following which the staff withdrew from the site.

However, the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), Jamia unit, alleged that university officials, including the proctor and registrar, along with the security adviser, attempted to forcibly remove the hunger strikers, dismantled tents and dragged women students during the confrontation.

The students have also sought the resignation of the chief proctor and security adviser over the alleged use of force against students.

A student at the protest site alleged that the administration’s representatives, accompanied by security guards and faculty members, attempted to remove the protesters’ tents after talks failed. The situation escalated over the next 15 to 20 minutes, the student claimed, adding that five hunger strikers moved inside a department while other students tried to shield them.

The student also alleged that police personnel were present in large numbers outside the university, that students were being prevented from entering the campus and that some were dragged away and detained. There was no immediate response available from the Delhi Police.

The protest, which began nearly two weeks ago, is centred on the demand for the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU), with students pointing out that elections have not been held since 2006.

Four students have been on an indefinite hunger strike, while a PhD scholar Sanam has been staging an indefinite sit-in at the Gulistan-e-Ghalib lawns, according to the SFI.

The university said a seven-member committee of professors had held four rounds of talks with the students and issued an appeal asking them to call off the agitation.

It also said a JMISU Constitution Draft Committee was notified on October 21, while a separate notification issued the same day said that disciplinary action taken or initiated against students protesting over issues arising from October 12 would be reviewed.

However, the SFI said the steps were inadequate and demanded that students be included in the constitution-drafting committee, announcement of election dates within the ongoing semester and revocation of all disciplinary action against protesters. The university maintained that the protest site at the Ghalib statue lawns was not the designated location for demonstrations, identifying Gate No. 18 as the approved protest site.
