The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has issued detailed instructions to officials on measures to tackle heavy rain, strong winds, and possible flood-related emergencies this Northeast monsoon.
According to Corporation Commissioner G.S. Sameeran, intensive precautionary measures were being implemented across the GCC limits, as directed by the Tamil Nadu government, in view of the Northeast monsoon and the El Niño phenomenon.
Zonal officers have been instructed to ensure readiness for any rain-related emergencies in Chennai and surrounding areas.
The officials are to conduct coordination meetings with Residents’ Welfare Associations and public representatives, while awareness campaigns are to be carried out in flood-prone areas through the media and public announcement systems. The preparedness of first responders, relief centres, and evacuation arrangements is also to be ensured, according to a press release.
Relief centres are to be equipped with adequate lighting, sanitation facilities, food, and other essentials. Fire and Rescue Services personnel, police, and medical teams are to remain on standby. Vehicles for evacuation, along with trucks, JCB excavators and tipper lorries, are to be kept ready for emergency operations.
Officials have also been instructed to remove hoardings and temporary structures, maintain fuel stocks and diesel generators, keep equipment ready for clearing fallen trees, ensure power backup at Urban Primary Health Centres, and maintain adequate stocks of essential medicines in hospitals. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain and strong winds.
