Track doubling of Aduthurai – Kumbakonam – Sundaraperumal Kovil broad gauge section in Tiruchi Railway Division is to begin soon.

The Southern Railway Construction Organisation, Chennai, has been entrusted with the task of executing the multi-crore doubling project sanctioned by Railway Board, New Delhi. The project has been approved ahead of Mahamaham, which is scheduled to take place from February 29 to March 9, 2028 at Kumbakonam. The 10-day festival celebrated once in 12 years is expected to attract a large number of devotees.

An official communication from the Railway Board sanctioning the doubling project “at a completion cost of ₹289.17 crore” was sent a few days ago to the Southern Railway General Manager and the Southern Railway Construction Organisation, Chennai.

The project has been sanctioned under the umbrella work (2026-2027) of doubling / tripling / quadrupling / multitracking to augment the capacity of the railway network.  The 21.5-km electrified single stretch from Aduthurai to Sundaraperumal Kovil via Kumbakonam falls along the Thanjavur – Villupuram mainline section.

The Railway Board has specified the estimated completion cost of civil ( ₹208.48 crore), signal (₹47.90 crore) and telecommunication and electrical works (₹32.79 crore).

Railway sources said tenders for the doubling project would be floated soon by the Southern Railway Construction Organisation. About nine hectares of land would be required for construction of additional railway lines and platforms at Aduthurai and Sundaraperumal Kovil railway stations. The plan was to complete the by December 2027.  The completion of the project would enable Southern Railway to operate more trains to and from Kumbakonam for the festival.

The Kumbakonam railway station has been one of the top revenue generating stations in Tiruchi Railway Division.  A major redevelopment project at a cost of ₹99.84 crore is under way at the station. The Southern Railway Construction Organisation, which is implementing the project, has planned to complete it by December 2027.
