A woman tried to attack former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee outside her residence in Kalighat on Tuesday (October 13, 2026), leaders of the Mamata All India Trinamool Congress said and filed a police complaint.

Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen, who sent an e -mail to the Officer-in-Charge of Kalighat Police Station, claimed that the woman who tried to attack was “reportedly a civic police volunteer and a drug addict presently [and] came up with a violent mode and attacked Mamata Banerjee with a knife”.

The complaint said that the “woman was hurling abusing language in an intoxicated manner” and even lied down on the road. Mr. Sen in her complaint said that it was concerning that the attacker could approach a Z-plus category security protectee and raised questions about larger conspiracy. There were no reports of any injuries to the former Chief Minister.

A police statement released later in the night said, that an incident occurred at the residence of the former Chief Minister when she was exiting the residence. “One Anusua Saha confronted her, leading to a heated altercation. The woman was subsequently detained by the police personnel on duty. Meanwhile, a complaint was lodged by TMC members. Necessary action is been taken as per law,” it added.

Identifying Ms. Saha as a 38-year-old Kolkata native, the statement said that she had been posted as a civic volunteer at the West Port Police Station.

The alleged incident occurred when Mamata Banerjee was going to Durga Puja pandal in her neighbourhood. The woman was apprehended by the Mamata Banerjee’s supporters and sent to Kalighat police station.

“There is no rule of law in West Bengal. Our leader, one and only one in West Bengal @MamataOfficial was brutally attacked, luckily the workers of @AITCofficial who were alert and prevented this dastardly act sponsored by BJP goons,” Trinamool MP Kirti Azad posted on social media. State’s Minister Agnimitra Paul said action should be taken against the person if she tried to attack the former Chief Minister. “Our party does not endorse such incidents. We will not commit the same mistakes which Trinamool Congress did in its rule,” she said.

Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had alleged that she had been put under house arrest after her defeat in the Assembly polls. Ms. Banerjee has held a few public meetings in Kolkata and districts. On Tuesday (October 13, 2026), her party leaders organised a gathering demanding resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and scrapping of SIR. Ms. Banerjee, however, did not participate in the protest.
