Rest of India u-23 knew Tamil Nadu u-23 had placed itself on the cusp of glory with early dominance, but that did not prevent the visiting team from putting its best foot forward on the third day at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here.
Left-arm spinner Emanjot Singh Chahal (seven for 102) was on a roll in Saturday’s opening session, helping RoI bowl TN out for 462 in the first innings even though the home side was just two down at the 400-run mark.
Openers Angkrish Raghuvanshi (88 batting, 159b, 7×4, 1×6) and Ayush Jethwa (58, 98b, 4×4, 3×6) ensured there was no repeat of what transpired on Thursday, with RoI trailing by 88 runs while standing at 195 for two at stumps. Raghuvanshi, who garnered 149 runs with Ayush, was handed a reprieve on 32 when K.T.A. Madhava Prasad dropped one at silly-point.
Earlier, the TN batters fell like a pack of cards, mainly due to Emanjot. The tweaker, operating with razor-sharp accuracy when sticking to a stump-to-stump tactic, was the architect behind the collapse – the home team lost its last nine wickets for just 67 runs. The slow bowlers were aided by the uneven bounce in the first half of the day.
The scores: Rest of India u-23 179 & 195/2 in 48 overs (Angkrish Raghuvanshi 88 batting, Ayush Jethwa 58) vs. Tamil Nadu u-23 462 in 136 overs (S.R. Athish 137, K.T.A. Madhava Prasad 174, Kiran Karthikeyan 73, Emanjot Singh Chahal 7/102).
