The Jharkhand Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expressed strong objection to the desecration of the statue of Syama Prasad Mookerjee located at Harmu in the State capital, Ranchi, where the statue was smeared with soot and defaced with offensive remarks.
A BJP delegation, led by former State president and former Rajya Sabha MP Deepak Prakash, along with State vice president Balmukund Sahay, general secretary Ganesh Mishra, and MLA Naveen Jaiswal, on Monday (September 28, 2026) went to the Argora police station to lodge an FIR against unknown anti-social elements and demanded strict legal action against them.
Mr. Prakash said stated Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was the architect of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s ideological foundation, the founding president of the Jan Sangh, and a key figure in the party’s ideology.
He remarked that all BJP workers are deeply pained, saddened, and shocked by the malicious attempt to insult the statue by smearing it with soot and damaging it. Mr. Prakash added that for the party, Dr. Mookerjee is not merely a great figure but a guiding light and a visionary leader who dedicated his entire life to the nation’s unity and integrity.
He further described that such an ugly and insulting act against the statue of a great national icon is extremely unfortunate and a matter of serious concern.
Mr. Prakash alleged that anti-social elements deliberately attempted to desecrate the statue. He asserted that while the statue could be damaged, the ideas and thoughts of Dr. Mookerjee could never be erased.
He stated that the statues of the nation’s great figures—regardless of their caste, religion, or social class—symbolise their contributions to the country, their patriotism, sacrifice, dedication, national consciousness, and pride.
“Displaying hatred towards, damaging, or desecrating their statues is not the mark of a civilised society; such acts deserve the strongest possible condemnation,”Mr. Prakash said.
BJP State president Aditya Sahu termed the act as extremely unfortunate, asserting that disrespect to such icons cannot be tolerated at any cost.
“Criminals in Jharkhand no longer fear the police and under the state government, the audacity of anti-social and anti-national elements has grown to such an extent that they dare to attack the honor of our great national figures,”Mr. Sahu said.
He demanded that the State government and police administration should immediately identify and arrest those involved in the act and ensure strict legal action against them. He warned that if the culprits are not apprehended soon, the BJP would take to the streets to launch a protest.
Indrajit Yadav, the BJP’s Harmu Mandal president, registered the complaint, following which the police lodged an FIR against unknown people. Police lodged the FIR under sections 324, 298, 196, 352, and 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.
BJP demanded impartial investigation be conducted, strict legal action be taken against the culprits, and adequate security be ensured for Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee Park and his statue located behind the BJP office.
