The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has administered anti-rabies vaccination to 86,489 stray dogs since launching a mass immunisation campaign as of September 20, 2026.
The campaign was launched with the objective of protecting the public from rabies and creating a rabies-free Chennai. The release said anti-rabies vaccination and treatment for internal and external parasites are being administered to stray dogs across the city, according to a press release.
According to the release, the campaign has been completed in all areas of Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Tondiarpet, Madhavaram and Royapuram zones.
The release added that vaccination and parasite-control treatment are currently being administered to stray dogs in all streets and at locations including educational institutions and hospitals in Ambattur, Anna Nagar and Alandur zones.
A total of 86,489 stray dogs have so far been covered under the campaign. Of them, 18,627 dogs were vaccinated in Ambattur zone, 16,956 in Madhavaram, 12,477 in Tondiarpet, 12,313 in Tiruvottiyur, 9,653 in Anna Nagar, 8,598 in Royapuram, 7,200 in Manali and 665 in Alandur, the release stated.
The release mentioned that the special drive is presently being carried out in Ambattur, Anna Nagar, and Alandur zones.
After completion of the programme in these three zones, the campaign will be extended to Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Adyar, Perungudi, and Sholinganallur zones. The release said that anti-rabies vaccination are planned to be administered to around two lakh dogs across all zones within 39 working days.
