Heavy rains, squally wind likely in West Bengal from September 22

A low-pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea is likely to intensify into a depression on Monday, bringing a spell of heavy rain and squally weather to West Bengal from September 22 to September 26

Parts of West Bengal are likely to receive heavy rainfall with gusty winds from September 22, 2026, due to a deep depression system forming over the Bay of Bengal.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea is likely to intensify into a depression on Monday (September 21, 2026), bringing a spell of heavy rain and squally weather to West Bengal from September 22 to 26. 

The intensity of rainfall in Bengal is likely to be higher in the coastal districts of Purba Medinipur and South 24 Parganas, with gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph, it said.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph, are likely in one or two places in the remaining districts of south Bengal, including Kolkata, till September 25, the weather office said.

It said heavy rainfall will also occur in the sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar from September 23 to 25.

Thunderstorms with gusty winds are likely over the other north Bengal districts of Uttar and Dakshin Dinajpur as well as Malda during the period, the IMD added.

“Continuing to move west-northwestwards, it is very likely to reach the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal near the north Andhra Pradesh — South Odisha coasts around the morning of 23rd September. Southwest monsoon moderate to strong over Andaman Sea; moderate over Northeast, Eastcentral, Southeast Bay of Bengal; weak to moderate over Northwest, Westcentral, Southwest Bay of Bengal,” said IMD. 

IMD also advised the fishermen not to venture into the deep sea from 21^st September along and off West Bengal coast and from 22^nd September to 25^th September. Fishermen are advised to return to the coast by the night of 21^st September.

“Swell waves in the range of 16.0 – 19.0 sec period with 0.9 – 1.1 m height are forecast up to 20:30 hours on 21-09-2026. It was advised that there is a possibility of surging waves; boats to ply with utmost vigilance; recreation with due care,” said IMD in its statement.
