SCR aims to enhance connectivity and ease congestion with major railway projects worth ₹50,000 crore in Telangana and beyond

SCR aims to enhance connectivity and ease congestion with major railway projects worth ₹50,000 crore in Telangana and beyond

Posted on September 18, 2026 By admin

Railway infrastructure projects worth about ₹50,000 crore across Telangana and parts of Karnataka and Maharashtra are at various stages of appraisal, approval and sanction by the Railway Board, according to the latest status of South Central Railway’s Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) and Final Location Surveys (FLS).

Among the most significant proposals is the 781.6-km Balharshah-Kazipet-Vijayawada-Gudur quadrupling corridor, including a bypass line between Indupalli and Duggirala. Estimated to cost over ₹16,800 crore, the project has cleared key stages within the Railway Board and is under active consideration.

The Balharshah-Kazipet and Kazipet-Vijayawada quadrupling works form part of a broader capacity enhancement plan along one of India’s busiest freight and passenger corridors, railway officials said.

The 173-km Secunderabad-Wadi third and fourth line costing ₹5,102 crore has been sanctioned and it involves constructing third line between Sanatnagar-Haifizpet and third/fourth line between Hafizpet-Wadi to ease the existing congestion in the network.

A major project that has already received a boost is the 110.4-km Kazipet-Secunderabad quadrupling line in Telangana with the ₹2,200-crore project recently securing approval from the Centre. It has also cleared a 38.21-km new railway line between Makutban in Yavatmal district and Goadchandur in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra at a cost of ₹493 crore to improve regional connectivity and ease congestion on the busy Balharshah-Nagpur route on Friday.

The 130-km Vikarabad-Krishna new line project, estimated to cost ₹2,884 crore too has gained momentum after the Telangana government agreed to bear land acquisition costs and it has been recommended for further processing by the RB.

The proposed 222.5-km Regional Ring Rail (North) around Hyderabad estimated to cost ₹11,500 crore is progressing with the SCR authorities clearing the project and forwarding the same to the Railway Board. Among new line proposals, Manuguru-Ramagundam railway line has received approval from the Ministry of Railways to be taken up under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, reflecting efforts to improve connectivity to coal-bearing and industrial regions.

The Dornakal-Gadwal railway line via Suryapet, Nalgonda, Nagarkurnool and Wanaparthy, estimated to cost more than ₹8,269 crore, is currently under review following discussions between the Railway Board and the Telangana government on cost-sharing arrangements.

However, some proposals, including the Vikarabad-Parli Vaijnath doubling, Mudkhed-Adilabad-Pimpalkhutti doubling and Bhupalapalli-Kazipet new line, have been shelved or deferred due to low traffic projections, underutilisation concerns and poor financial viability.
