Kerala HC grants police protection to journalist Aparna Kurup following cyberattacks over TV Debate involving Kanthapuram’s remarks

Posted on September 14, 2026 By admin

The Kerala High Court has directed the Kochi City Police Commissioner to ensure protection to life and residence of Aparna Kurup, a journalist in a Malayalam TV Channel.

Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas also instructed the Commissioner to ensure the law and order in the vicinity of Ms. Kurup’s residence without any obstruction or interference until her petition is disposed.

Ms. Kurup had approached the court following alleged cyber attacks and death threats arising from a TV program she had hosted debating the remarks made by Sunni Muslim Scholar Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musaliyar about women. In her petition, Ms. Kurup claimed that her residence address along with her photograph was published on social media platforms as part of the cyber attacks.

She had approached the Kochi City cyber police and Kochi City Commissioner and filed a complaint on September 7 against the alleged attacks. She claimed that “cadres of certain Islamic fundamentalist organisations including SDPI were actively instigating and sharing her personal details, calling for a protest in front of her house and for physical harm”.

The television debate had led to the registration of a case against Ms. Kurup as well, for making allegedly provocative statements during the TV debate. It was later taken down by the channel. Ms. Kurup was booked by the Kochi City cyber police based on a complaint from B.M. Abdul Hakeem from Kasargod.
