India’s Ministry of Power have given their go-ahead for exporting power to Nepal to help recover from devastating floods which, among other things, destroyed their hydropower infrastructure and took lives of more than 1,300 people.
The approval paves the way for exporting power for 18 hours a day starting Sept 13 until Dec 31 this year.

“The approval will help Nepal meet its power requirements during this difficult period and further strengthen the close and longstanding energy cooperation between India and Nepal,” stated India’s Power Ministry.
It further informed the quantum of power to be exported from January next year would be reviewed in December.
The Hindu had earlier reported that Kathmandu had asked New Delhi to accord requisite approvals for transmission of electricity earlier than usual.
Nepal usually imports electricity from India during the winter months, starting around October, as power generation is typically low in the Himalayan country during the freezing winter months.
Conversely, the country exports its excess hydropower to India during the summer.
According to official data, India imported 3,299 million units (MUs) of power from Nepal in fiscal year 2025-26 and exported 1,451 MUs to it.
