Tibetan community members stage a protest march against the visit of China’s President Xi Jinping for the BRICS Summit 2026, in New Delhi on September 11, 2026

As many as 64 members of the Tibetan Youth Congress were detained by Delhi Police on Saturday (September 12, 2026) night after they stormed the Bhairon Marg near Bharat Mandapam protesting against Xi Jinping’s visit to India.
The protesters carried the Tibetan national flag and ran towards the venue when they were stopped by Delhi Police officials and detained. The visuals showed some of them being dragged by the police.
The protest was held under the banner of the Tibetan Youth Congress, which said that it condemned Xi Jinping’s visit to India due to major human rights violations by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), systemic violence and suppression of Tibetan language, religion and culture.
The TYC members said that they were not against India’s hosting of the summit but wanted to bring Tibet’s issues to limelight through the protest. “China has been continuously violating human rights of Tibetans and suppressing Tibetan culture and religion. We demand that Tibetan political prisoners in China be released, mindless construction on the Tibetan plateau be stopped and there be no interference of China in Tibet’s religious matters,” said Tenzin Lobsang, General Secretary, Tibetan Youth Congress.
“The question of Tibet remains directly connected to India’s national security and regional stability,” he added.
Those detained were taken to four different police stations: Mandawali, Ashok Vihar, Madhu Vihar, Gazipur. They are expected to be released on Sunday (September 13) evening.
The police also detained on Friday (September 11) three students from Students for Free Tibet, who climbed poles inside an underpass near Pragati Maidan and waved anti-Xi flags.
The police later also put under house arrest the organisation’s national director, Tenzin Passang. An accountant, a media person from Tibet Radio and an Indian student were also detained.
The three students have remained in Tihar Jail since then after a magistrate ordered their preventive detention until September 14.
