Frequent power outages in rural areas irk consumers

Frequent disruptions in power supply in rural areas of Karur district have irked consumers.

The power outages, which were occasional in May and June, have become frequent in recent weeks. Complaints of power outages continue to pour in from different parts of the district.

According to sources, consumers experienced frequent disruptions in power supply in areas such as Kulithalai, Krishnarayapuram, Ayyarmalai, Thogamalai, Kadavur, Palaviduthi, Lalapettai, Puliyur, Tharagampatti and Mylampatti. They alleged that power supply was being disrupted mainly between 10 p.m. and 12.30 a.m.

The repeated interruptions had caused severe inconvenience to people, who had been facing high heat and a prolonged summer-like situation. There were several instances of affected people thronging electricity offices.

Similarly, people deprived of sound sleep due to frequent power outages held road blockades in different areas over the last few days. Kulithalai, Pettavaithalai and Palaviduthi were among the places where people took to the main roads to vent their anger. Tharagampatti and Sevalur also experienced power disruptions on Friday.

“The unscheduled power cut is causing severe inconvenience to the people. We could not have a sound sleep during the night hours. The problem has become severe in recent days,” said S. Vijayan, a resident of Thavuttupalayam.

While acknowledging the issue, a senior official of the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd. told The Hindu that load shedding was being effected in a few areas depending on the power supply. It was a temporary issue and would be resolved soon.
