A 30-year-old man was allegedly confined overnight, assaulted, tied with ropes and paraded through the streets of Ramachandra Rajupeta in Bhogapuram mandal of Vizianagaram district, Andhra Pradesh over a payment dispute of about ₹30,000.

The incident came to light late on Sunday (September 6, 2026) evening, after a video of the assault spread on social media. Vizianagaram Superintendent of Police A.R. Damodar visited the spot, spoke to the victim and asked the police to take stringent action. The police have booked five persons for attempt to murder and kidnapping and under provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

According to the Bhogapuram police, the victim, Yella Rajesh of Ramachandra Rajupeta, had taken a motorcycle for a trial run after agreeing to buy it from mechanic V. Mahesh for ₹25,000. During the ride he allegedly hit a police constable’s car, and Mahesh’s brother paid ₹5,000 towards the repair, taking the sum sought from Rajesh to ₹30,000. He allegedly failed to pay and had been avoiding Mahesh for some days.

On the night of September 5, Rajesh was allegedly intercepted while travelling by Mahesh and L. Sriram, who took him to Mahesh’s mechanic shed and confined him there for the night. The two allegedly assaulted him and attempted to kill him while demanding payment, the police said.

When Rajesh said on the morning of September 6 that he could not pay, the two, with the alleged help of three others, B. Venkata Rao, N. Govind and V. Apparao, forced him to take off his shirt, tied his hands, put a noose around his neck with ropes and paraded him through the streets.

The video, shot from a vehicle following behind, shows the man walking shirtless along a two-lane road with a rope around his neck, the other end held by the pillion rider of a scooter ahead of him. Further on, a man on foot takes the rope and pulls him along the road.

Bhogapuram (Rural) Circle Inspector N. Srinivasa Rao registered a case against all five under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to attempt to murder and kidnapping. The five were arrested and were to be produced before a court on Monday.
