The controversy over the office of Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee at Camac Street is refusing to die down. A day after the office of the Diamond Harbour MP was vandalised by miscreants, the West Bengal Fire Department on Friday (September 4, 2026) ordered that the basement and two floors of a high-rise building be vacated.

“Be it pertinent to mention that Renewal of Fire Safety Certificate (RFSC) for occupancy of the 2B+G+7-storied Business Building at premises no. 9, Abanindranath Tagore Sarani (Camac Street). Kolkata-700017, bearing memo no: IND/FES/20182019/1/37021, dated 10.08.2023, was valid for three years which has expired. In the said RFSC, it was clearly recommended to renew the same before expiry. However, you failed to do so,” the order by the State Fire Department said. The order directed that the said occupancy until and unless the fire safety measures are complied and the RFSC was obtained.

Copies of the order have been sent to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, the officer-in-charge of Shakespeare Sarani Police Station and the CESC for necessary action. A joint team of police and fire officials conducted a floor-by-floor inspection of fire safety measures in the building on Monday. On Thursday, the premises were vandalised, and six people were arrested for the violence.

The premises at 9 Camac Street in Kolkata have been used by Abhishek Banerjee over the past several years. Personnel from Kolkata Police and senior Trinamool Congress leaders were embroiled in a scuffle on August 27 over the removal of a party hoarding on the building.

The police have registered FIRs and questioned Trinamool leaders in connection with the incident. Abhishek Banerjee and Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’ Brien were also summoned by Kolkata Police in connection with the incident.

After the defeat of the Trinamool Congress in the West Bengal Assembly elections in 2026, the office of Abhishek Banerjee at Amtala in his constituency has also been targeted. The Calcutta High Court had ordered a status quo on attempts by the administration to demolish the office of the Trinamool leader at Amtala.

The Trinamool Congress leadership, including former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, had described these attempts to attack, demolish and vacate party offices as “political vendetta” by the Bharatiya Janata Party government.
