India’s plant-protein ingredients market is expected to double from its current estimated size of ₹4,500 crore over the next five years, driven by rising demand for protein-rich, nutraceutical and functional food products, according to industry estimates.
“India is witnessing a clear shift from calorie-consciousness to nutritional consciousness, with protein emerging as a key driver of food choices,” Praveer Srivastava, Executive Director of the Plant Based Foods Industry Association (PBFIA), said at the Fi India & ProPak India 2026 event in Mumbai.
“The plant-based food sector is growing at about 18% CAGR, significantly faster than the estimated 7–8% global growth rate,” he said, adding at the current pace, the plant-protein ingredients market could expand to roughly ₹9,000 crore by 2031, highlighting the scale of the opportunity for domestic manufacturers.
However, the sector remains heavily dependent on imports. Nearly 90% of plant-protein ingredients used in India are currently imported, creating significant scope for domestic manufacturing and value addition.
The branded dairy and meat-alternative segment, meanwhile, is estimated at around ₹500 crore and has grown by about 64% over the past three years, indicating accelerating consumer adoption of plant-based products.
“With plant-based protein identified by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries as a key growth engine, stronger policy support can help develop domestic capabilities and reduce the country’s dependence on imports,” Mr. Srivastava said, adding establishing a plant-protein ingredient extraction facility with a capacity of 10–15 tonnes a day could require an investment of ₹200–250 crore, underscoring the capital-intensive nature of the industry.
With India possessing a large agricultural raw-material base, increased domestic processing could help reduce import dependence while creating opportunities for investment and exports.
According to Dr Prabodh Halde, Head-Technical Regulatory Affairs at Marico and West Zone Chairman of the All India Food Processors’ Association, the wider Indian food ingredients and additives market is expanding rapidly. The segment is currently valued at around ₹85,000 crore, with natural ingredients accounting for an estimated 30–35%. The market is growing at a double-digit rate.
“The next phase of growth, however, must focus on greater value addition, stronger exports and closer integration across farmers, processors, research institutions and industry. Food processing is critical to improving farm incomes, he said.
Beyond market expansion, the sector is also being shaped by trends such as personalised nutrition, supply-chain traceability, carbon-footprint reduction and circular-economy models, said Kaushik Desai, Secretary General, Health Foods and Dietary Supplements Association (HADSA).
“With its rich biodiversity, agricultural strength and traditional knowledge, India has the potential to emerge as a global hub for health ingredients by combining Ayurveda with modern science,” he added.
