A 35-year-old man, a displaced resident of Poola Subbaiah Veligonda Project, tried to immolate himself outside Markapuram Collector’s office in Andhra Pradesh Friday morning (August 28, 2026).

The man, identified as Yedukondalu, reportedly did not receive rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) compensation for the project. He is resident of Sunkeshula village in Peddaraveedu mandal.

Mr. Yedukondalu was detained after the police stopped him from self immolating.

According to the police, he had also staged a protest at the Collectorate when Water Resources Minister Nimmala Rama Naidu was about to address a press conference here.

Mr. Yedukondalu alleged that his name was missing in the list of beneficiaries of R&R package.
