Maniyampatti urn discoveries amplify demand for comprehensive archaeological study

Maniyampatti urn discoveries amplify demand for comprehensive archaeological study

Posted on August 23, 2026 By admin

Reports of discovery of numerous urn burials (muthumakkal thaazhigal) at Maniyampatti village near Boothamangalam in Melur taluk of Madurai district have once again highlighted the importance of bringing the region’s ancient history to light.

Maniyampatti, located near Kallangadu area, falls under Boothamangalam panchayat.

Cultural enthusiasts have already discovered archaeological traces in Kallangadu area including stone circles (kalvattam), dolmens (karpatheukai), urn burials, and thick red pottery shards. Consequently, continuous demands have been raised to conduct a comprehensive archaeological study at Kallangadu and its surrounding areas.

In light of this, historical researchers visited and inspected the site where the urns were found at Maniyampatti. They said the archaeological traces discovered there should be systematically studied and documented by the Department of Archaeology, and steps should be taken to preserve the urns and exhibit them in an archive.

With the discovery of urn burials at Maniyampatti, it was essential to study them in conjunction with the archaeological traces already identified in the nearby Kallangadu area, they added.

The Maniyampatti-Kallangadu regions should be viewed as additional evidence suggesting a connection to ancient human settlements, burial practices, and ancient cultural history.

Locals have requested that all archaeological evidence found during the study such as urn burials, stone circles, dolmens, and pottery shards be scientifically documented, and studies be conducted regarding their period, nature, and historical background.

Further, they have urged the government to declare areas where significant archaeological evidence has been found as protected zones in accordance with proper legal regulations, and to take steps to preserve the discovered artifacts and establish an archive or archaeological museum for public viewing.

They have also emphasised that the Tamil Nadu government should take immediate action to uncover the antiquity of the Maniyampatti-Kallangadu region through scientific archaeological studies, ensuring that the history buried beneath the earth is not destroyed.
