Shares of India’s Godrej Consumer Products plunged more than 11% on Wednesday (August 12, 2026) and posted their steepest fall in over six years as CEO Sudhir Sitapati’s abrupt exit fuelled concerns over strategic execution at the consumer goods company.
The maker of Cinthol soaps named finance chief Aasif Malbari as CEO and managing director on Tuesday(August 11) after Sitapati resigned, just three months after his reappointment for a five-year term.
Godrej Consumer’s shares, which slipped to a three-year low, settled 11.2% lower at 910 rupees in their busiest session since May 2021. The stock was the top loser on the FMCG index , which ended 0.7% lower.
Analysts said the sudden leadership transition puts greater focus on the execution of Godrej Consumer’s growth plans, with improved performance in its core brands seen as key.
This comes after Godrej Consumer Executive Chair Nisaba Godrej on Tuesday (August 11) said the company needed greater “execution rigour”, particularly in online sales, digital marketing and liquid vaporizers.
“An abrupt change is never liked by the market,” said Amit Purohit, senior vice president at Elara Securities, adding that investors would monitor execution of the company’s plans before they regain confidence in the stock.
HSBC downgraded Godrej Consumer to “hold” from “buy” and cut its target price to 1,120 rupees from 1,260 rupees, citing greater uncertainty, while Goldman Sachs and Nomura retained “buy” ratings but lowered their targets. NEXT PHASE
Despite Sitapati’s pivotal role in shaping the company’s 2040 vision, the management highlighted other areas where execution could improve, including the use of AI and effective digital marketing, Jefferies said in a note.
Vision 2040 is Godrej Consumer’s long-term growth strategy focused on expanding its addressable market, entering new categories and targeting faster-growing segments.
“Bringing in an experienced internal CFO to steer the company through margin and cost pressures shows how important profitability and operating efficiency are in today’s environment,” said Agamjeet Dang, CEO of executive search firm Executive Access.
Malbari, who joined Godrej as CFO in 2023, has more than three decades of experience across the consumer goods and automotive sectors, including leadership roles at Hindustan Unilever and Tata Motors.
