Swell waves likely along coast of Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday

Swell waves likely along coast of Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday

Posted on August 11, 2026 By admin

The coastal areas of Thiruvanathapuram district are likely to experience the ‘kallakkadal‘ phenomenon – the sudden swell of the seas causing rough waves – on Tuesday. Issuing alerts to fishermen and coastal residents, the National Centre for Oceanographic Studies and Research (INCOIS) has informed that, as part of the swell surge, waves ranging in height from 1.0 to 1.6 meters and sea erosion are likely along the coasts from Kappil to Pozhiyur in Thiruvananthapuram district till 11.30 pm on Tuesday.

As part of the phenomenon, waves of 1.4 to 1.5 meters high are likely along the coasts of Kanyakumari as well till 11.30 pm. INCOIS has warned that fishermen and coastal residents should be vigilant against the rising swell waves during this period. As the sea is likely to become rough during the period, people should stay away from the vulnerable areas as per the instructions of the authorities, said a bulletin.

Venturing into the sea aboard small vessels and yachts should be avoided during this time. Similarly, the fishing vessels that already ventured into the sea ahead of the warning should also avoid trying to berth or land during periods of strong waves. All activities, including tourism-related activities on beaches, should be completely avoided until the warning of the INCOIS is withdrawn, said the district administration in a statement here on Monday.

Fishing vessels should also be safely moored and stored in the harbour. Maintaining a safe distance between boats will avoid the risk of collision. The safety of fishing equipment should also be ensured. Trips to the beach and recreation at sea should be completely avoided. The warning also states that special caution should be exercised as there is a risk of coastal erosion, said the statement.
