Kathakali artiste Kalamandalam Sibi Chakravarthy will receive the first Kalaratna Award instituted by the Palakkad Kathakali Club.

The award carries a cash prize of ₹10,000 and a citation.

The award, instituted this year as part of the club’s 20th anniversary celebrations, is to be presented to an artiste selected from the fields of Kathakali acting, music or percussion. The anniversary celebrations will be held at Chembai Memorial Government Music College here on Saturday. Kathakali play Nalacharitham Day-4 featuring several well known artistes will be staged.

The Palakkad Kathakali Club has been organising Kathakali performances every second Saturday for the past 21 years. The anniversary programme will bring together leading Kathakali artistes, said club officials here on Thursday.
