Delhi Police beef up security at Assembly before Monsoon Session

A day ahead of the Monsoon Session’s commencement, the Delhi police on Thursday ramped up security at the Assembly premises following a meeting with Speaker Vijender Gupta.

A comprehensive review of the security and logistical arrangements was done in the meeting, an officer said.

The police also conducted a mock drill at the Assembly premises to assess operational preparedness, emergency response capability and readiness to respond to any exigency.

The arrangements come in the wake of a series of bomb threats to the Assembly and a security breach in April this year, when a man drove his vehicle into the Assembly complex and remained in the premises for five minutes before driving off. He was later arrested.

Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Devesh Shrivastava said around 130 police and paramilitary personnel will be deployed throughout the four-day session to provide multilayered security cover.

This will include the installation of view cutters along the periphery of the Assembly premises and deployment of an Assistant Commissioner of Police-rank officer. Additionally, the police will set up a dedicated office within the Assembly complex to facilitate continuous supervision and strengthen coordination among security agencies.

Other measures include installing hydraulic road blockers at all entry gates, upgrading access control measures and increasing deployment. A Quick Response Team of the Central Reserve Police Force has been deployed to ensure swift response in the event of any exigency, said the police.

Under the revised access protocol, entry will be permitted only through gate No. 1 while the remaining gates will remain restricted to regulate movement and reinforce perimeter security.
