A room with the capacity to accommodate four students in the new Vasuki Hostel at Bharathiar University in Coimbatore.

Bharathiar University has been able to manage with the surge in hostel admissions for the 2026-27 session owing to the inauguration of a new hostel at the start of this month. Constructed at a cost of ₹3 crore, the hostel named Vasuki has 58 rooms with a capacity to accommodate 246 students.

This time around, about 150 additional students were admitted into the hostels.

BU has, in all, 13 hostels named after poets and family members of Bharathiar. These 13 comprise four men’s hostels, five women’s hostels, a sports hostel, two hostels for research scholars and one international hostel.

The university prioritises hostel admission to students from far-off places. Till last year, the hostels accommodated close to 1400 students.

This time around, the women’s hostels are fully occupied. Likewise, the sports hostel and the hostels for men and women research scholars are also entirely occupied. The international hostel with an intake capacity of 45 is also in high demand, Registrar R. Rajavel said.

Undergraduates and postgraduate students are accommodated in rooms with capacity to accommodate two to four students. Factoring in the continuous surge in student patronage for its hostels, the Syndicate of Bharathiar University recently approved a proposal for sprucing up the building infrastructure.
