Digi Yatra cannot insist on Aadhaar as proof of identity, says Kerala HC

Digi Yatra cannot insist on Aadhaar as proof of identity, says Kerala HC

Posted on July 15, 2026 By admin

The Kerala High Court has stated that the Digi Yatra portal cannot insist on Aadhaar details to establish a person’s identity.

The court directed Digi Yatra to inform the court whether any other proof of identity would be sufficient to register on the portal by a person, while observing that Aadhaar cannot be used for the same.

The Airports Authority of India contended that Digi Yatra was a voluntary service and that the Aadhaar number was used only to establish a person’s identity. The court prima facie held that Aadhaar details may not be necessary while registering in Digi Yatra if the person had any other document proving their identity.

The Division Bench of Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice V.M. Syam Kumar was considering a public interest litigation seeking to ensure that the collection, storage, processing, and transmission of sensitive personal data of passengers at airports across India is conducted in strict compliance with the provisions of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025.
