Nearly 50 people who dined at a restaurant in the city last week have reportedly been diagnosed with food poisoning.
Several of them remain admitted to hospitals across Kochi. Food safety officials have since shut down Al-Reem, an Arabic restaurant on Thammanam–Pulleppady Road, and suspended its licence.
According to officials, although the incident occurred on July 10, complaints began surfacing only on Monday. Samples collected from the restaurant have been sent to the laboratory for examination. Kuzhi Manthi and alfam are among the main dishes served at the establishment. Reportedly, diners began experiencing discomfort the day after consuming the food. Many sought treatment for fever, vomiting, and dysentery.
The Food Safety department expects more complaints in the coming days. Officials have recorded statements, including from those who remain under treatment in hospitals.
