Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital (KKCTH) has launched a cystic fibrosis clinic to strengthen coordinated care for children.
According to a press release, cystic fibrosis is an inherited, progressive genetic condition that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system, although several other organs may also be involved. Traditionally considered rare in India, it is now increasingly being recognised across the country. However, delayed diagnosis remains a major challenge, often resulting in advanced lung disease, poor growth and other complications.
Children with cystic fibrosis require regular, lifelong, multidisciplinary care. A dedicated clinic brings together specialists in paediatric pulmonology, gastroenterology, nutrition, physiotherapy, and endocrinology, along with medical social workers.
Regular follow-up helps in early detection and treatment of lung infections, close monitoring of growth and lung health, optimisation of airway clearance and nutrition, and the appropriate use of medicines, including newer targeted therapies.
The initiative will be formally inaugurated alongside a Continuing Medical Education programme on July 19.
