The Salem City Police have introduced traffic diversions on a trial basis starting Sunday (July 12, 2026) in the New Bus Stand locality to reduce congestion.
The Omalur Main Road, which runs through the Salem new bus stand, is home to private hospitals that attract a large number of visitors. Similarly, many commercial establishments, such as hotels and bakeries, that function in that area get a large number of visitors. Since the traffic flow is high, leading to congestions, the district administration and the city police have implemented traffic diversions in the locality from Sunday.
Vehicles heading to hospitals on Brindavan Road and nearby areas shall pass via Omalur Main Road as usual. But those coming out of these areas should take the SKS Speciality Road, 7th Cross Road and LIC Colony Road to reach Omalur Main Road. The vehicles heading to LIC Colony, 7th Cross Road and Vasantham Hotel Road should pass via SKS Junction. For this purpose, the LIC Colony Road has been made one-way.
Likewise, vehicles coming from Brindavan Road will turn right at the 7th Cross Road and cannot approach Omalur Main Road directly. On Sunday, traffic police were deployed in the locality to guide the vehicles to the diverted routes.
Salem Collector K. Elambahavath said these diversions are implemented on a trial basis. Based on the results, a decision will be taken to make these changes permanent. He urged the public to cooperate with the changes.
