Resident of Luz Avenue, Supraja Srinivasan, has started an online petition to Save Nageswara Rao Park from excessive concretisation. The petition on Change.org has garnered more than 3000 signatures until July 4. She writes that modernisation works have stripped away the park of its trees, eroded vegetation, with massive patches of concrete being added everyday.
Supraja’s petition also decries the massive iron structure with a concrete floor that currently dominates the park. She says with play areas laid with concrete, children’s safety is at stake.
In the The Hindu Downtown dated June 28 titled ‘Concrete rebirth’ of Nageswara Rao Park decried, Supraja had said how she has been representing to various authorities including the chief minister and MLA to relook at the plan.
“We urge the Greater Chennai Corporation to halt further concretisation, re-evaluate the whole plan, restore green spaces, ensure child safe play areas, and preserve the park’s ecological role as a flood sink,” add the petition.
