Representatives of various associations submitted a petition at the Thoothukudi district collectorate on Monday, urging the authorities not to permit discussions of the Sterlite Copper plant at the public meeting allegedly being planned by the political parties such as MDMK, CPI and CPI (M).

The petitions were submitted by associations, including Conch Divers Workers’ Union, Crab Net Workers Development Association, Alaiosai Conch Divers Development Association, Thoothukudi District Fishermen Workers’ Union and several fishermen and conch divers associations in the district.

According to the petitions, the MDMK, CPI and CPI(M) are planning to organise a public meeting in Thoothukudi, further expressing concerns that the meeting may include discussions on the Sterlite Copper plant, its closure and the proposed Green Copper project.

They stated that the matters relating to Green Copper project are currently before the High Court and discussing the matters that are sub judice, in political forums could lead to unnecessary controversy and potentially disturb peace and communal harmony in the district. The petitions requested that authorities impose conditions prohibiting discussion of such matters at the meeting.

The petitions also stated that, in the interest of social justice and equal opportunities for all viewpoints, supporters of Green Copper project should also be granted permission to hold public meetings, either on the same day or on another day to create awareness among the public about the project’s environmental protection measures and other related aspects.
