Global leaders have gathered at a luxury French lakeside resort for the high-stakes 52nd G7 Summit, running from June 15 to 17, 2026. This year’s event kicks off under a dramatic geopolitical spotlight, opening just hours after a historic preliminary peace deal was announced by the United States and Iran.

Host nation France successfully secured the attendance of U.S. President Donald Trump, who arrived in Évian-les-Bains on Monday (June 15, 2026). He made an early exit from last year’s summit in Canada. Over the course of the three-day event, leaders from the world’s wealthiest nations will confront a packed agenda, with a focus on next steps on the West Asia peace deal, the war in Ukraine, global economic imbalances, and strategies to secure critical minerals independently of China.

Inside the grandiose Évian-les-Bains

French President Emmanuel Macron has picked the lakeside town of Evian-les-Bains, nestled at the foot of the Alps on Lake Geneva to host this year’s G7 meeting.

The summit venue and the surrounding Lake Geneva region has been heavily secured for the event, designating them into two distinct zones — red and blue. Access to these zones is strictly regulated, utilising a QR-code-based entry system to ensure security throughout the duration of the summit, which will conclude on Wednesday (June 17, 2026).

Who are attending the G7 Summit?

France is currently serving as the rotating president of the G7, which includes Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

In addition to the G7 nations, Brazil (Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva), India (Narendra Modi), Kenya (William Ruto), South Korea (Yoon Suk Yeol), and Ukraine (Volodymyr Zelenskyy) have been invited to participate in the discussions. The G7 will also see the participation of the United Arab Emirates (Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan), which has been adversely affected by the West Asia conflict, as well as key mediators Qatar (Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani) and Egypt (Abdel Fattah el-Sisi).

U.S.-Iran peace deal takes center stage

G7 leaders will be keen to learn the details of the U.S.-Iran deal. A memorandum of understanding is scheduled to be officially signed on Friday (June 19, 2026) in Switzerland but the precise terms are not known yet.

Mr. Trump said the Strait of Hormuz, a major shipping route for global oil and gas supplies that Iran has effectively shut down for months, would open on Friday (June 19, 2026), and that he had ordered the end ‌of the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports.

In a statement, the secretariat of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said war and military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, would end permanently starting on Monday (June 15, 2026) night.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in France to take part in the Summit. This visit is of great importance, offering Mr. Modi a key opportunity to interact with global leaders on matters that are critical not only for India but also for the broader Global South.

The occasion marks India’s 13th appearance at the G7 Summit and the Prime Minister’s seventh consecutive attendance. Mr. Modi will be attending as a “top priority” partner to discuss deep tech, global macroeconomics, and the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
