P. Shroff-trained Margaretta (G. Vivek up) won the Zavaray S. Poonawalla Fillies Championship Stakes (1,600m), the first classic of the season here on Sunday (June 14). The winner is owned by Mr. Mehernosh H. Deboo & Mrs. Auzita M. Deboo.

Vivek, who confidently kept her filly in handy last position till 600m, gradually improved to fourth rounding the bend, before manoeuvring his mount from the inside in the home stretch. Margaretta started galloping with giant strides in between Havoc and Starzella near the last 150m and won resolutely.

Due to poor visibility and underfoot condition not conducive for racing, the Stewards of Bangalore Turf Club Ltd decided to cancel the remaining two races of the day.
