Union Home Minister Amit Shah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed 4,398 days in office on Tuesday (June 9, 2026) and would surpass the record of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on Wednesday (June 10).

He said Mr. Modi would have the distinction of serving the nation for the longest continuous period as an elected Prime Minister of India. He stated that during his tenure, Mr. Modi made public welfare the guiding principle of governance.

On Wednesday (June 10), the members of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would meet in Delhi to mark the 12 years of the alliance being in power.

Mr. Shah launched the Land Port Management System (LPMS– ‘VINIMAY’) on Tuesday (June 9).

Addressing the programme, the Minister said that since 2014, moving beyond a security-centric approach, land ports were developed as the first line of defence for security, a means to facilitate trade, and a bridge for people-to-people connectivity. At the same time, land ports had played a significant role in the holistic development of border areas, promoting legitimate trade, and addressing challenges such as migration from border villages and districts. Easier movement of people across borders had strengthened mutual trust between the people of both countries and enhanced cultural exchange. He said that in a country like India, with its vast land borders, border management played a very important role.

Smart Borders

Mr. Shah said the Home Ministry was working on a four-pronged strategy to secure India’s borders under the concept of Smart Borders. The Land Port Management System had been designed keeping in mind the requirements of all stakeholders, while giving special emphasis to security. Together with the Smart Border initiative, this system would help to create an impregnable and secure border management framework. He said the LPMS and the Smart Border initiative would together create a more secure and modern border management system. Mr. Shah added that this would help curb illegal activities and ensure the establishment of a robust and secure framework.

The Minister said the system would provide an integrated digital platform for the management of cargo, passengers and vehicles. It would enhance coordination among various agencies and make the exchange of information extremely seamless. Nearly 90% of paperwork would be eliminated. The Single Electronic Window and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)-based gate operation system would result in significant time savings. Truck waiting times were expected to reduce by approximately 40% to 60%, while gate processing times would reduce by 22% to 35%. This would not only boost trade but also promote tourism and facilitate better coordination, dialogue, and cultural exchange between the citizens of both countries, Mr. Shah said.
