An app to help eateries sell surplus food

An app to help eateries sell surplus food

Posted on June 3, 2026 By admin

Two young Kozhikode entrepreneurs are set to launch an app that will enable eateries to sell surplus food at discounts of 60% to 80% during closing hours.

Kyka, meaning ‘let’s eat’, was founded by Muhammed Nihal V. and Hiba Nourin K.P. The app is built on a ‘triple impact model’ that offers affordable food to customers, generates additional revenue for partner eateries and helps reduce food waste, said Mr. Nihal.

On the app, eateries will be listed with a brief description, allowing customers to order small, medium or large ‘Magic Bags’. The surprise hampers will indicate the source eatery and quantity of food, but the contents will remain unknown until collection.

As the app does not offer delivery, customers will first be shown eateries in their vicinity, with the option to explore outlets beyond that radius. Users will be notified when their orders are ready and can collect them from designated pick-up points. The app will be available on Google Play and the App Store from June 10.

The Kozhikode Corporation has backed the initiative, citing its potential to divert food from landfills and reduce methane emissions. Kyka will be launched in Kozhikode on a three-month pilot basis. “After the pilot period, we will expand to other locations in Kerala and, hopefully, other States,” said Mr. Nihal.
