Two persons were arrested for stealing 45 sovereigns of gold jewellery, two kg of silver objects, and ₹15,000 in cash from the house of a retired government school teacher in Tirupattur on Tuesday.
Police said the arrested persons were identified as G. Nagaraj, 60, and his accomplice, B. Vaishnavi, 26. They are residents of KGF Colony in Karnataka. Initial inquiry revealed that the victim, K. Manohar, 66, had been living with his wife, M. Chitra, 57, in Tirupattur for many years. On April 9, the couple went to Chennai to meet their relatives.
Police said that on their return, the couple noticed gold earrings on the floor of the house. The couple checked the cupboard and found that 45 sovereigns of gold jewellery, two kg of silver objects and cash were missing. The CCTV cameras in the house was also damaged. Based on an alert, Tirupattur town police rushed to the house with forensic experts and fingerprints were taken.
Police have also secured the CCTV footage along the route where the house is located. Superintendent of Police Shymala Devi formed special teams to nab the suspects. Police analysed CCTV cameras in the area and found that two persons were loitering in the area on that day. Mobile phone signals were also traced to identify the location of the suspects, and they were arrested from their hideout in KGF Colony. Later, they were lodged at sub-jail in Tirupattur town. Further probe is under way.
