The annual festival of Poondi Our Lady of Lourdes Basilica (popularly known as Poondi Matha Kovil) near Thirukkattuppalli in Thanjavur district began on May 6 with the hoisting of the holy flag.
According to the Basilica authorities, the annual festival is celebrated from May 6 to 15 every year. During the ‘nava naatkal’ (novena days) Holy Mass will be conducted by priests till May 13. On the morning of May 14, a Memorial Holy Mass of former Parish Priest V. S. Lourde Xavier and Royappar will be held.
In the evening, a grand car procession will be held after the Chorus Song and Holy Mass by Kumbakonam Diocese Bishop A. Jeevanandham. The festival will end with the lowering of the holy flag on May 15.
