There was a light-hearted moment during the afternoon session on day one of the India A–South Africa-A opening ‘Test’ at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Grounds. Skipper Rishabh Pant encouraged off-spinner Tanush Kotian to keep tossing the ball, telling him not to worry about getting hit as long as he bowled tight lines.

Kotian responded, striking four times to bring his side back into the contest.

Speaking to the media after the day’s play, Kotian credited his domestic experience for helping him find rhythm and confidence.

“In the morning, there wasn’t much help, but after lunch, we came up with a plan to bowl tighter lines around the stumps. That worked — we got nine wickets by the end of the day,” he said.

Mumbai factor

Kotian highlighted how bowling in the Mumbai Ranji set-up has sharpened his skills.

“In our team, there are some of the best batsmen against spin. Bowling to them really helps — they guide us on what troubles them and discuss tactics and field placements. Having senior players like Ajinkya Rahane and Shardul Thakur makes a big difference,” he added.

“When I get a good seam position, it helps me extract bounce and turn. Maintaining consistency and building pressure with dot balls gives me confidence that I’m contributing, even if I’m not taking wickets,” said the 27-year-old.
